Your Child's First Trip to the Dentist
When you should take your child to the dentist
Your child’s first dentist appointment should be when they’re around 6-months old – or when their teeth start appearing through their gums. After that, they’ll probably need to go back every six months or so, depending on your dentist’s advice.
It can be good to take them before 6 months and in between times too (perhaps by bringing them along with you for your dentist visits). That way your child will have a chance to get accustomed to being at the dentist and won’t be so unsettled when it’s their turn. If they’re still a little unsure about it all though, you could try playing a simple role playing game to get them more comfortable.
And if you’re nervous about going to the dentist yourself, it’s important not to show it so your child doesn’t pick up on your fears.
What will happen on their first visit?
Your child’s first dentist visit (when they’re around six months old) should really just be to make sure everything’s growing and developing the way it should. And it’s highly unlikely your child will need a filling or any other kind of treatment at this stage.
And because children are treated free, you won’t need to worry about the cost either.
After that, your dentist will advise you on when to bring them in for their regular check-ups. By starting a good routine early on, you’ll help keep tooth and gum disease at bay and set them up for a long and happy dental life.
